 Styles and Characteristics:

  • holds first records of furniture construction

  • Joineries used: 
    • Flat dowels



    • Clamps

    • Pegs

    • Lacing

    • Dovetailing

    • Mortise and tenon

    • Tongue and groove

    • Mitering

  • Coffins reflected great craftsmanship in cutting grooves and fitting panels

  • Common people also had crude pieces

  • Ornamental details applied:
    • Dog’s legs
    • Lion’s paws

  • Lion, swan and duck heads were frequently used to enrich portion of the pieces
  • Comfort was considered:
    • Shaped both seat and back of the chair to fit human form
    • No upholstery—but used pillows and covers were placed on chairs for comfort

  • Generally low:
    • People were about 5 ft ht, and are used to squatting

  • Gesso was used as ground for painted scenes on chests
    • Chalk and white lead on a mold

  • Ivory and ebony were used as inlay
    • A surface decoration created by inserting into a solid wood a pattern or representation  composed of colored wood or other materials…

  • Style was later used in:
    • Regency
    • Victorian Periods in England
    • Empire Period in France
